It should not be okay for politicians to think that they can so easily sway the vote in their direction just by using a well known celebrity. Even more so, a politician should not be able to sway the vote simply by having the support of a celebrity. The father’s of our country did not fight so hard for American citizens to abuse the power and right to vote. Politics should solely be based on what you believe not who you know. Politics have become too much about looks and who supports you rather than a person’s actual stance on issues. As an American citizen you have the responsibility to the nation and its history to become a knowledgeable, hard-to-persuade voter.

“Men wear the pants!” According to Urban Dictionary, wearing the pants is being the more dominate person in a relationship, many times implying that they have complete control over the other person. This commercial, and the entire Dockers’ ad campaign, is degrading to both men and women. {dockers.png} First of all, the message that is being sent to men is that they need to always be tough and in charge. Walking through life without “wearing the pants” is something a man should be embarrassed about. Not just that, but look what has happened since men haven’t been wearing the pants. Cities are crumbling, children are misbehaving and old ladies can’t cross the road. The advise from the advertisement is for men to “put down the plastic fork, step away from the salad bar…get your hands dirty” and stop drinking foamy non- fat lattes.

quiche” advertisement. (ADD LINK) In contrast
In addition to putting extreme pressure on men to be in charge and fix the problems of society, women are also being exceedingly degraded in this ad. The blame for everything that is going wrong in the world, the “cities crumbling” are all because women have been on their own running society. They only way to fix all the problems is to hand back over the pants to men, give them the power and control again. In the past women were required to wear skirts and dresses. Wearing pants was extremely un-lady like. As women began to fight for more power and say they were also, indirectly, fighting for their right to wear pants. It showed the authority women had obtained. It started to put women on the same level and equal playing field as men. And now, once again, we start moving in the wrong direction. “Men, Wear the Pants!” is saying “women, nice try but give the pants back to the men.”
It is ad campaigns like this that can’t simply be overlooked and allowed to influence society; especially the younger generations. Little boys don’t need the message engraved in their heads that they always need to be the most powerful and can’t ever let a woman be at the same level as them or even have power over them. Little girls don’t need to be told that men should always be a charge because they won’t be able to do a sufficient job. These are ridiculous messages that need to be addressed and argued against with the truth. Women are powerful, men are powerful and no one gender needs to “wear the pants.”

Not only does this list generalize and make assumptions about gender preferences but, it also insinuates that women can’t survive on their own without men. But, as this article brings up, there may be an improvement to this advertisement in contrast to the Burger King, “don’t eat quiche” advertisement. (ADD LINK) In contrast to the advertising campaign by Burger King which instructs men to be more “manly” and destructive, Dockers is encouraging men to bring back the chivalry. Pulling out the chair for women and opening doors and being respectful to the elderly. While this point may be true, the overall message that the world is crumbling without men “putting the pants on” overshadows any positive light that could be shown on the commercial.

Being a part of a democratic government is a huge part of what it means to grow up in America. Our government is designed to be ruled by the people. We vote for who we want to represent us and make decisions for us. In some instances we vote on whether or not we want certain bills to be passed. We have the freedom of speech and the right to speak out against policies of the government officials that we do not agree with. It is a big responsibility to be a well-educated, involved citizen when it comes to the government.

television star, {huckabee_norris.jpg} Chuck Norris,
Not only did Norris follow along on Huckabee’s campaign trail but he also appeared in commercials endorsing Huckabee’s message. One commercial in particular (shown above) doesn’t seriously discuss Huckabee’s views but instead involves comical back and forth remarks between Norris and Huckabee about the other person. It finally ends with “Chuck Norris Approved.” Huckabee was obviously hopeful that by using Norris in his commercial he would draw attention and support for his political campaign. Norris defended the campaign commercial by stating "My contribution, when we did that promo thing, it kind of lit a spark for Mike. But the thing is, that spark would have gone out if he hadn't had a message that people wanted to hear. But he had that message, and so the spark became a raging fire.”

Why is it then that a candidate who is running to be the Republican nomination for president feels as though they can sway votes his way by using a well known celebrity? This was exactly the case when former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee got martial arts champion and movie and television star, Chuck Norris, to help endorse his campaign. A Boston Globe article by Charlie Savage, compares Norris’ contribution to the campaign trail compared to other political endorses such as Oprah Winfrey. He claims that while Winfrey may show her support for a week or two and then continue with her own job, Chuck Norris has became some what of a running mate for Huckabee. As said by Bruce Buchana, a political science professor at the University of Texas at Austin, the Huckabee- Norris relationship is “like choosing a vice presidential candidate – kind of making up for your weakness.”
